Bookshop: Francis Giacobetti Catalogue
Published Tuesdays and Fridays, The Photography Post Market column highlights items for sale in our market. We also invite guest contributors to add items to our shops.
One of the most amazing photographers to come from Oui magazine is Francis Giacobetti. I’ve had a difficult time finding his published work, so when this catalogue showed up I was thrilled!
My adulation of Francis really came after watching Emmanuelle 2, a softcore B movie which Giacobetti directed and shot. It’s not the most riveting story line but the lighting in each scene is amazing. It’s like watching Oui mag on film.
I’m most familiar with Giacobetti’s images of romantic women, but the book I’m offering is a portrait project with Francis Bacon. A bit left field, but supposedly the two men shared a mutual admiration for one another. They worked on a series of portrait sessions that resulted in a show at the Marlborough Gallery in 2003. Once again, Giacobetti’s use of color and light is amazing. Hallucinogenic with an inherent darkness, these images are Francis Bacon paintings in photographic form.
