Bookshop: Hot Shots & Norman Seeff
Published Tuesdays and Fridays, The Photography Post Market column highlights items for sale in our market. We also invite guest contributors to add items to our shops.
One of my absolute favorite books, I’m offering you a copy of Norman Seeff’s first book Hot Shots. Completely underrated, a bit obscure, Norman is a master of the portrait… his subjects just happen to be Rock and Roll Superstars. I picked this book up at Kayo Books in San Francisco (amazing!), found it within the first five minutes of browsing, bought it, and walked out of the store knowing I wouldn’t find anything to top it.
Norman Seeff was the go to photographer for all the major Record companies during the seventies, I originally came across his work shopping for vinyl. I kept stopping to check the credits of these amazing covers, of course they were Norman.
Scan through his credits you’ll find Fleetwood Mac, Bobby Womack, The Band, Ray Charles, BB King, Carly Simon, Zappa, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Ike and Tina, Patti Smith, James Taylor, The Rolling Stones… the list goes on and on.
It’s not that his long list of celebs gives him cred, it’s actually that the photos he produced for some of these artists are iconic. Norman actually started my Cher obsession, she never looked better! If you thought Annie Leibovitz created an amazing body of work with her American Music project, here you will find her DIRECT inspiration…
Norman Seeff is still alive and his work should be celebrated.
