I can’t stop looking at Micah Schippa’s work. It’s been months and I keep coming back for more! Schippa is continually pushing the boundaries of our interpretations and expectations of images and the technologies used to produce them. From the gestural to the formal, Schippa, investigates our changing perceptions of images. Aside from his personal work he is part of the collaborative effort PaintFX which features the collectively produced work of Schippa, Jon Rafman, Tabor Robak, Parkert Ito, and John Transue.

For some reason the coming fall reminds me of Anna Krachey’s work. I think it’s something about the pensive, slightly melancholic mood that wafts through her projects. So it made sense on this cool, slightly gray morning, that her work was exactly what I wanted to see.

The work is divided into five bodies (The Pink Opaque, Land/Landscape, Green Vs. Red, Four Corners, and Trophies) that feel more like related vignettes than entirely separate series. On one hand, there is a material richness in Kracheys work that reveals a deep reverence for the simple shape and feel of things. Yet, on the other these shapes and surfaces are not without context or emotion. Deeply familiar, yet somehow just out of reach, the images feel like found artifacts of a favorite aunt or eccentric cousin without feeling overly nostalgic or precious. Here are a few of my favorites. Enjoy!

Jessica Silverman of Silverman Gallery in San Francisco got in touch recently to let us know about a show of Tammy Rae Carland’s work called Funny Face, I Love You that will be opening this Friday and running through October, 23rd. Carland, the chair of the Photography department at California College of Arts and Crafts, received her MFA from UC Irvine and attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. This will be her second solo show at the gallery.

“The work features a suite of new [large scale] photographs, a selection of mixed media works as well as a cast porcelain sculpture. Inspired by the history of female comedians, Carland explores questions of humor and desire, juxtaposing images of empty stages with singular figures caught mid-act. These works isolate the body, focusing less on the artifice of public personas than the sheer spectacle of performing corporealities. Through these, Carland foregrounds the fragility and pathos inherent in these acts of vulnerability and self-humiliation—acts which also resonate with the unraveling of gender roles through acting out. Invariably, the conversation opens onto a larger meditation on the fragmentation of the body and the currency of the abject, while engaging the politics of performativity and the legacy of feminism.” (via Silverman Gallery)

The work and I am sad to say that I will be unable to see it installed, is at once intimate, surreal and slightly cringe-worthy. Separating the performers from their performance or the site of their performance, Carland captures a moment free of the content of the performed piece that allows the viewer to access the hidden and ofter overlooked emotional space of the performer. Reminiscent of Philip Lorca Di Corsia’s Pole Dancer’s a vulnerability, often taken for granted in any performative act, is revealed in the consideration of the body  and, in particular, female bodies.
