1. DEADLINE TOMORROW! “A new competition supported by the Annenberg Space for Photography and other public and private organizations invites amateur and professional photographers around the world to submit a photograph completing the phrase “Democracy is…” Winning submissions to the International Democracy Photo Challenge will be selected by a combination of online voting and an independent panel of judges. The competition is open for submissions through July 28. Click here for more information on the competition including submission instructions.” (via PDN Pulse)

2. Don’t forget that the deadline for the Tracy Baran Award is coming up! The Tracey Baran Award was established to honor the memory and achievement of Tracey Baran, a young photographer who died after a short illness in 2008. This annual award, with a fellowship grant of $5000, will be given to one emerging female photographer who is a citizen of the United States. The jury panel for 2010 will consist of Jen Davis, photographer; Christine Osinski, photographer; and Leslie Tonkonow, Director, Leslie Tonkonow Artworks+Projects. The deadline is September 1st.

3. Also the deadline for YouTube’s PLAY: A Biennial of Creative Video. Developed by YouTube and the Guggenheim Museum in collaboration with HP, YouTube Play hopes to attract innovative, original, and surprising videos from around the world, regardless of genre, technique, background, or budget. As an affiliate, the ZKM is participating in this project, together with roundabout 25 cultural and educational institutions from 12 countries. The deadline is July 31st.

4. This weekend is your last chance to check out Justin James Reed’s solo show at Stockbridge Fine Art in Philadelphia. “This work represents a departure from Reed’s previous photographic method, with each unique piece concentrating on an individual concept. “Don’t Die,” explores inherent gestural and sculptural aspects of photography in contrast to its traditional applications.” (Stockbridge Fine Art). A must see if you are in the tristate area.

5. Humble Arts Foundation: Manual Transmission will be on exhibit this Saturday at Bush Gardens Rooftop: 250 Moore Street, Brooklyn, NY 11206. “Manual Transmission I, a group exhibition where the curators commissioned an artist (or collaborative group) to create a unique piece comprised of 36 exposures from one roll of 35mm color slide film. The exhibition will display each project of all 36 exposures simultaneously on 10 screens during a one-night rooftop slide show on July 31, 2010, 8:30P.M.” (via Humble Arts)
