Ask an Atelierista: Kara Canal!
I learn so many things from so many people in my line of work, but I think Kara Canal takes the cake. Ms. Canal is the Atelierista at Williamsburg Northside Preschool, and teaches our best and brightest about art daily.
It’s amazing to see all the different ways children approach artistic creation, and how sophisticated their thought processes can be. The things she does with these kids- I must say, my grad school professors had nothing on her. She has four-year-olds discussing gradients and King Tut (and then painting him).
Here she is, preparing to mold minds:
Anyway, I was flipping through Kara’s flickr the other day, and I was even more astonished than usual.
The kids were re-thinking Raymond Meier and Julianne Moore (and many other photographs) from T Magazine.
What a very geometric interpretation, I love it.
(the original):
This caused me to ask a question. Here it is:
Dear Ms. Canal, what was your process here, with your students and the Julianne Moore and the drawing- how did you do it?
Process? I used to do this with Interview magazines when I was a teen! It evolved organically during our Open Studio. I ordered sketchbooks for them, and then after a few weeks of collaging, drawing, painting, I offered them magazines to explore. They took my small suggestion and have gone wild. I know there is much to say from a visual culture, post-modernism, pastiche-y place, but for now I’m happy to watch them make connections in their own way.
Fabulous! Let us see more:
Thanks, Kara.
